Do You Have a Gap Left By a Tooth Extraction?

Dental Crowns and Bridges in South Calgary AB

Broken and missing teeth make it difficult to perform daily activities such as chewing, speaking, and smiling. At our Legacy, AB dental office, we work closely with skilled laboratory technicians to create natural-looking dental crowns and bridges to restore patients’ teeth and function.

Common Uses for Dental Crowns

Dental crowns correct a number of conditions that impact the appearance and function of teeth.

Broken and decayed teeth – Dental crowns cover the tooth structure and add support for compromised teeth.

Rebuilding worn teeth – Teeth grinding and clenching wears down teeth over time and can expose dentin. Worn teeth look short and can feel sensitive. Dental crowns provide protection.

Cosmetic improvements – Chipped, discoloured, dark, and misshapen teeth may benefit from tooth-coloured porcelain crowns.

Dental Crown Treatment in T2X 4K8

As with all treatment, Dr. Sandon Wiedemann, Dr. Laiton Wiedemann, and Dr. Jayde Wiedemann will completely numb the area for your comfort. They will remove decay and damaged tooth structure in the preparation process, which makes space for your dental crown to fit in with adjacent and opposing teeth properly.

We will take an impression of your teeth to send to the dental lab, which will provide a custom dental crown to fit your smile. Our team will create a temporary crown to protect the tooth until your restoration arrives from the dental lab.

At your final appointment, your dentist will bond the dental crown to your tooth and adjust the bite, if necessary, for a comfortable fit.

Bridging the Gap in Your Smile

Dental bridges fill the gap left by a lost tooth by anchoring a prosthetic tooth in place using crowns on two healthy adjacent teeth. To give patients the most attractive and seamless results, our dentists will meticulously match the colour and shading of nearby teeth to your dental bridge.

For ideal results, replace a missing tooth as soon as possible to avoid shifting of the adjacent teeth, which can make it more difficult to fit a replacement tooth later.

The process for a getting dental bridge is similar to that of dental crowns. Your dental bridge will require extra care to keep the anchor teeth and underlying gum tissue healthy.

Flossing around and under the bridge will help keep bacteria from causing gum disease and decay, which will undermine your treatment. Many patients find small interproximal brushes useful for maintaining a clean dental bridge.

Do You Have a Painful Broken or Decayed Tooth?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you’re dealing with a cracked or broken tooth, the first step is to visit your dentist. Your tooth may or may not be causing you discomfort. Whether or not you are in pain, it’s important to assess the damage and determine how to repair your tooth so you can avoid more significant problems or discomfort.

Dental Bonding

If your tooth is slightly chipped or fractured, your dentist may be able to repair it with a treatment called dental bonding. This procedure uses the same material as dental fillings to repair small chips or cracks in your teeth.

Porcelain Veneer

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that fits over your fractured or broken tooth and is bonded directly to it. Dental veneers can be an excellent solution for teeth that are chipped or cracked.

Tooth Crowns for Broken Teeth

If your tooth is broken beyond what dental bonding can repair, a tooth crown may be an excellent solution. A crown fits over your damaged tooth and closely mimics its size, shape, and color to blend with your smile naturally.

A crown also provides all the functions you need for chewing and eating with ease.

If you have a tooth in need of repair, your dentist in South Calgary is here to help.

When are dental crowns needed?

dental crown or “cap” is usually recommended to restore both the strength and beauty of your natural teeth.

Preventing fracture

The human bite can average anywhere between 150-500 PSI, that’s a lot of force! With this extreme amount of force teeth can fracture leading to possible root canal treatment or tooth loss. Here are a few situations where a tooth is no longer strong enough on its own and a crown would be recommended:

  • A very large cavity or missing portion of a tooth
  • A very large filling
  • Tooth that underwent root canal therapy
  • Tooth with a partial fracture causing sharp pain while chewing

Improving your smile

Crowns can be coloured and designed to look nearly identical to your natural teeth. Here are a few situations where a crown could be recommended for front teeth when either fillings or veneers would not work:

  • Misshapen or extremely discoloured teeth
  • Shortened or broken teeth as a result of grinding
  • Teeth with fillings that keep getting discoloured or falling out

Our recommendations in South Calgary

These are some common situations we find every day however every patient and every tooth is unique. If you feel you need a crown we recommend a visit with one of our dentists to evaluate things.
