Has It Been Too Long Since Your Last Dental Visit?

Preventive Dentistry in South Calgary, AB

At Legacy Dental Care, our focus on prevention can help patients avoid many oral conditions that threaten the teeth and gums. By maintaining routine dental appointments, you are giving our dentists the opportunity to detect and treat oral diseases in their earliest stages so you can receive prompt treatment.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

We begin each patient exam with a thorough evaluation that goes beyond a quick check-up.

  • Examination of teeth and dentistry
  • Periodontal evaluation
  • Diagnostic digital dental x-rays
  • Medical history and medication list
  • Children’s development and growth

Your new patient exam is also a great time to discuss any cosmetic concerns you might have and anything that has recently changed with your oral health. We never rush our patients, and our dentists prioritize listening to their goals for their smiles.

Additional Preventive Dental Treatments

If you attend regular dental exams and cleanings every six months, your dental cleanings will likely involve the removal of calculus between teeth and just below the gumline. Each dental cleaning includes a polish to remove surface tartar and stains, leaving teeth feeling smooth and fresh.

For patients who have missed a few dental cleanings or who build heavy tartar, we will customize your dental cleaning to prevent gum disease and restore your healthy smile.

Periodontal dental cleanings are designed to remove heavy calculus that causes inflammation in the gums. More frequent dental cleanings, such as three to four times per year, can help these patients avoid infection.

Our hygienists and dentists will work with patients to educate and demonstrate proper home care.

Oral Appliances to Protect Teeth and Gums

To complement our preventive dentistry, we offer custom oral appliances to protect teeth from damage.

Athletic mouthguards – Custom mouthguards make it easier to breathe while enjoying your favourite sport. They also have a slim, comfortable fit that helps promote patient compliance.

Bruxism nightguards – Chronic grinding can wear down teeth, cause cracks, and contribute to sensitivity. Wearing a custom nightguard places a protective barrier between upper and lower teeth, which protects teeth from the excessive forces of nighttime teeth grinding.

Cavity Prevention Treatments

For patients at a higher risk of developing dental caries (cavities), our dentists may recommend additional layers of protection.

Fluoride varnish – Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens enamel.

Fissure sealants – Sealants are made of a tooth-coloured, flowable material that seeps into the grooves of the back teeth, keeping out the bacteria that cause decay. As with tooth fillings, we use a curing light to harden sealants. They can last for several years.

Dental Cleanings in South Calgary

By starting with a thorough oral exam, we will get the information necessary to arrange a customized dental cleaning. In some cases, a simple scale and polish will keep you healthy. If you have periodontal disease, however, we may need to book a series of deep dental cleanings to eliminate the infection.

We leave plenty of time at your first appointment for you to ask questions and share any changes with your oral health.

For most healthy patients, visiting your South Calgary dentist every six months for routine teeth cleanings and checkups is recommended.

If you are managing gum disease, you may need one or two cleanings each year in addition to your bi-annual cleanings to keep your condition under control.

Why Are Preventive Teeth Cleanings and Checkups Important?

Since gum disease is an active infection in your mouth, it’s important that you effectively manage this condition to guard not only your dental health but also your overall health.

Science has found clear links between the inflammation that causes gum disease, and the inflammation that causes other serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. It seems that having gum disease can contribute to these other health issues and vice versa.

Protecting your health with six-month cleanings and checkups will help you combat concerns like gum disease and tooth decay before they cause more significant problems.

We Invite You to Be a Part of Our Dental Family

If you’re looking for a family dentist in South Calgary, your team at Legacy Dental Care welcomes every member of the family from grandma to your toddler. We make it simple and convenient for families to have their dentistry in one location.

Regular dental cleanings help your teeth feel fantastically clean but that’s not all, they are also critical to your overall oral health.  Over time the soft, fuzzy-looking plaque that collects around our teeth gets hardened from minerals in our saliva.  This hardened plaque is called calculus or “tartar” and will attach itself to locations on your teeth above and below the gum line.  Despite doing a stellar job at brushing there is no way to remove these hardened deposits, only a trained dental professional with special instruments can do so.

These tartar deposits each containing millions of bacteria love to irritate our gum tissue. The inflammation that’s a result of this irritation is called gingivitis and left untreated can lead to irreversible destruction of the gums’ attachment to our teeth (periodontal disease).  Further destruction can even lead to bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

Regular Dental Exams in T2X 4K8

If that wasn’t motivation enough, one study found that patients with periodontal disease have a 2-3x higher chance of having a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular problems. Any type of inflammation anywhere in our body is not normal, so why should our gums be treated any differently?  We always recommend a regularly scheduled cleaning at specific intervals tailored to each individual for these reasons.  Call to book your appointment with one of our talented hygienists today in our south Calgary dental office and let us help you achieve the healthy smile we all want.
