Comprehensive Dentistry for the Whole Family
Children's Dentistry in South Calgary, AB
At Legacy Dental Care, we offer our patients a truly family-centred experience; after all, our dentists are all brothers who own and operate our family-friendly dental clinic here in Calgary, AB.
It’s important to help children develop a positive attitude toward dentistry and caring for their teeth. We can help. With a child-friendly treatment style, our team is passionate about helping our littlest patients keep their teeth comfortable for a lifetime.
Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
We support the Canadian Dental Association’s recommendation of providing children with their first dental exam by their first birthday. At this milestone dental visit, we encourage parents to take pictures and make their child feel special. It’s a big day!
One of our dentists, Dr. Sandon Wiedemann, Dr. Laiton Wiedemann, or Dr. Jayde Wiedemann, will examine your child’s development and oral health if they cooperate. We always work at your child’s pace.
We will also talk to parents about dietary support as well as childhood behaviours that can impact oral health, such as:
- Pacifier/soother use
- Finger and thumb sucking
- Bottle use
- Home tooth brushing and flossing
We will spend some time helping your little one become familiar with the dental clinic and our team.
Preventing Childhood Tooth Decay
Dental decay remains one of the most common preventable childhood diseases. At Legacy Dental Care, we make fighting cavities easier with a variety of preventive measures.
- Nutritional counselling
- Dental cleanings
- Oral exams and x-rays
- Fluoride treatment
- Dental sealants
You can support healthy teeth and gums at home by brushing and flossing your child’s teeth twice daily and after any sweets. Your child will need help with home hygiene until their motor skills develop fully and they form healthy habits – usually around age eight or nine.
How We Diagnose Dental Decay
Sometimes our dentists will identify decay through a visual exam, but that only tells part of the story. Decay can occur between teeth and under the enamel while it is invisible on the surfaces of teeth.
Bitewing x-rays will help with early detection and make it easier to treat decay before it advances to a tooth infection or requires an extraction.
It is important to protect baby (primary or deciduous) teeth because they offer guidance for permanent teeth and assist with developing a healthy adult bite.
Keeping Active Kids Safe
If your child loves adventures and is active in sports, a custom mouthguard will help protect the teeth and gums from a sporting incident by absorbing force from a stray hockey stick or ball.

We Make Dentistry Fun in South Calgary
We have toys and iPads, and we even offer nitrous oxide sedation to help fidgety or nervous children relax. We also speak to children without using scary terms that may put them off from visiting the dentist.
A ride in the chair, introductions to our team, and tooth brushing demonstrations will involve kids in their oral care, empowering them to look after their smiles as they grow.
We Partner with Parents
We work with parents to help their kids develop excellent oral care habits both at home and in the dental office. If your child is particularly prone to dental decay, fluoride treatments and sealants will add extra protection.
The Canadian Dental Association recommends that kids have their first dental appointment by their first birthday or when their first tooth makes its appearance. We follow that recommendation and invite kids from their very first appointment.
For a South Calgary family dentist, consider Legacy Dental Care. We look forward to meeting your family.
