Until the implementation of laser dentistry, soft tissue surgeries required traditional cutting and sutures, which were often painful and took some time to heal. At Legacy Dental Care, we have implemented the use of laser dentistry to improve soft tissue surgeries for our patients.

Laser Dentistry Treatments

Periodontal (gum) disease treatment – By removing diseased tissue with a laser, we promote healing and gum regeneration.

Frenectomy surgery – Sometimes the small tissue flaps attaching the lips to the gums are overdeveloped and need to be reduced to avoid speech problems, a gummy smile, and the development of a diastema (a gap between front teeth).

Gingival sculpting – Reshaping the gums on the front teeth can reduce a gummy appearance to the smile. By exposing more tooth structure, your smile will look more natural. If necessary, we can design dental veneers as part of your smile makeover.

Children's Dentistry

We love helping kids develop good habits to support healthy smiles. Legacy Dental Care is a family-friendly dental practice owned and operated by three brothers with a passion for helping our Legacy patients improve their oral health. It all starts with kids.

We Make Dentistry Fun in South Calgary

We have toys and iPads, and we even offer nitrous oxide sedation to help fidgety or nervous children relax. We also speak to children without using scary terms that may put them off from visiting the dentist.

A ride in the chair, introductions to our team, and tooth brushing demonstrations will involve kids in their oral care, empowering them to look after their smiles as they grow.

We Partner with Parents

We work with parents to help their kids develop excellent oral care habits both at home and in the dental office. If your child is particularly prone to dental decay, fluoride treatments and sealants will add extra protection.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that kids have their first dental appointment by their first birthday or when their first tooth makes its appearance. We follow that recommendation and invite kids from their very first appointment.

For a South Calgary family dentist, consider Legacy Dental Care. We look forward to meeting your family.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is considered to be any procedure that improves or enhances your smile. This could include procedures like:

  • Tooth crowns and bridges – To repair decayed or broken teeth
  • Dental implants – To replace one or multiple missing teeth
  • Porcelain veneers – Cover many cosmetic imperfections
  • Invisible braces with Invisalign – Straighten teeth and correct your bite
  • Tooth-coloured fillings – Eliminate tooth decay while keeping the aesthetics of your smile
  • Dental bonding – A quick and less invasive way to cover small cosmetic imperfections
  • Professional teeth whitening – Keeps your smile bright and white

That being said, most of these procedures also repair your function, which means that cosmetic and restorative dentistry go hand in hand. Cosmetic dentistry ensures that you’re able to chew your food with ease while eliminating or covering imperfections in your smile.

If you’re considering making changes to your smile’s appearance, the first step is to schedule an evaluation with one of our dentists at Legacy Dental Care to discuss your goals. Cosmetic dentistry in South Calgary could include one or more of the procedures we discussed above, and our dentists will recommend the best options to help you meet your goals. Then you can decide how you want to proceed.

Dental Crowns and Bridges

If you’re dealing with a cracked or broken tooth, the first step is to visit your dentist. Your tooth may or may not be causing you discomfort. Whether or not you are in pain, it’s important to assess the damage and determine how to repair your tooth so you can avoid more significant problems or discomfort.

Dental Bonding

If your tooth is slightly chipped or fractured, your dentist may be able to repair it with a treatment called dental bonding. This procedure uses the same material as dental fillings to repair small chips or cracks in your teeth.

Porcelain Veneer

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that fits over your fractured or broken tooth and is bonded directly to it. Dental veneers can be an excellent solution for teeth that are chipped or cracked.

Tooth Crowns for Broken Teeth

If your tooth is broken beyond what dental bonding can repair, a tooth crown may be an excellent solution. A crown fits over your damaged tooth and closely mimics its size, shape, and color to blend with your smile naturally.

A crown also provides all the functions you need for chewing and eating with ease.

If you have a tooth in need of repair, your dentist in South Calgary is here to help.

When are dental crowns needed?

dental crown or “cap” is usually recommended to restore both the strength and beauty of your natural teeth.

Preventing fracture

The human bite can average anywhere between 150-500 PSI, that’s a lot of force! With this extreme amount of force teeth can fracture leading to possible root canal treatment or tooth loss. Here are a few situations where a tooth is no longer strong enough on its own and a crown would be recommended:

  • A very large cavity or missing portion of a tooth
  • A very large filling
  • Tooth that underwent root canal therapy
  • Tooth with a partial fracture causing sharp pain while chewing

Improving your smile

Crowns can be coloured and designed to look nearly identical to your natural teeth. Here are a few situations where a crown could be recommended for front teeth when either fillings or veneers would not work:

  • Misshapen or extremely discoloured teeth
  • Shortened or broken teeth as a result of grinding
  • Teeth with fillings that keep getting discoloured or falling out

Our recommendations in South Calgary

These are some common situations we find every day however every patient and every tooth is unique. If you feel you need a crown we recommend a visit with one of our dentists to evaluate things.

Dental Implants

At Legacy Dental Care, we provide a number of options to replace missing teeth for patients who want to improve their diets or the appearance of their smile.

Tooth Replacement Options

Many patients choose dental implants in our Legacy dental office, but we offer alternatives for patients with varying needs.

Dental implants – replace the entire tooth structure, including the root
Dental bridge – fills the gap in the smile and keeps remaining teeth from shifting
Dentures – replace all teeth on the upper or lower arch
Partial dentures – replace some missing teeth
Implant-retained dentures – four to six dental implants anchor dentures in place
Implant-supported bridges – replace multiple teeth in a row

Modern Dentures in T2X 4K8

Modern dentistry has improved how we replace missing teeth. Dentures used to look generic and boxy and were difficult to fit. You might be surprised to learn that modern dentures and bridges look more natural than those of the past.

A full evaluation with one of our dentists will determine the options available to you. We will present all teeth replacement options and help you make a choice that adds confidence and allows you to eat more of the foods you love.

If you are facing extractions or have missing teeth, contact us to book an appointment.

A dental implant is a very minimally invasive way to replace a missing tooth. In the past, dentists recommended exclusively a bridge or a removable denture to replace missing teeth. A bridge requires crowns on neighboring teeth while a partial denture is something that can easily be removed. A dental implant is currently the best way to replace a missing tooth without having the downsides of a bridge or denture.

What is it?

There are 3 components to a dental implant:

Implant Body: Titanium screw that replaces the root of the tooth

Abutment: Connector between the implant screw and tooth

Tooth: Porcelain tooth that is coloured and shaped to match your other teeth

Are dental implants painful?

Like any dental treatment, pain afterwards is very typical. However our patients often find Advil or Tylenol can easily take care of the discomfort the following day. In fact, it’s often much less tender then removing a tooth!

Does your South Calgary office do implants?

Of course! We can place the implant screw and restore the tooth all within our own office, no referrals needed.

Emergency Dentistry

Dental emergencies are scary, but they do happen. The first thing to remember is not to panic. We recommend that you call our Calgary, AB dental clinic immediately, and our experienced team can help you decide on the best next steps.

Tips for Handling Common Dental Emergencies

  • If you have knocked out a tooth, keep it moist until you can get to our office. Try to put it back into the socket if you can. It’s imperative to get to the dentist soon if there is going to be any chance of saving the tooth.
  • If you have a toothache, you might need to come in immediately, depending on its severity. When toothaches go from bad to unbearable, you might have a tooth infection that needs a root canal.
  • If you have suffered any type of trauma and your teeth have been loosened, you need to call immediately. When the trauma is because of a blow to the head or an automobile accident, you should go straight to the emergency room and call us from there.
  • If you have broken a tooth, this is probably an immediate dental emergency. Contact us right away for an assessment.

Invisalign Clear Braces

As your Invisalign provider in South Calgary, we at Legacy Dental Care recommend that you come in for a consultation to talk to one of our dentists about the clear braces option. Invisalign are suitable for most older teens and adults who have the following dental issues:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Mild gaps in the teeth
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth

Advantages of Invisalign

Invisalign clear braces offer many advantages for patients who opt for this type of orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign treatment is not only more discreet than traditional metal orthodontics, but treatment times are usually faster as well. For most patients, treatment lasts for six to 18 months.

Patients also love that there are no food restrictions with Invisalign since the clear plastic aligners are removed for eating. For the same reason, brushing and flossing is a breeze—and no different from a normal oral hygiene routine.

Patients who have a special event or who will have their picture taken can remove the aligners for a few hours. It’s important to remember, however, that the aligners must be worn about 22 hours a day if patients are going to reach their smile goals.

Contact Our South Calgary Office

If you have more questions about Invisalign, we invite you to contact Legacy Dental Care, your Invisalign provider in South Calgary.

Invisalign is an orthodontic therapy that relies on clear aligners to straighten teeth. This system may correct the following:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Twisted teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Uneven spacing between teeth
  • Certain bite alignment issues

It is designed for older teens and adults, and it also has several benefits, including:

  • Discretion—The aligners are virtually transparent
  • Soft plastic—For a more comfortable fit
  • Removability—Brush, floss, and enjoy your meals

The process starts with a consultation in our dental office. This is where you learn whether Invisalign is right for you, share your goals, and undergo an exam.

Your dentist will let you know, based on findings, whether Invisalign is the best option for your smile and talk to you about the length of treatment, which is different for everyone.

If Invisalign is right for you, we take impressions of your teeth, and the Invisalign lab relies on these models to create your custom aligners.

Every few weeks, you change your aligners until you have exhausted your supply, marking the end of treatment.

Preventive Dentistry

We ask patients to leave about two hours to complete their initial oral evaluation. Our dentists, Dr. Sandon Wiedemann, Dr. Laiton Wiedemann, and Dr. Jayde Wiedemann, believe establishing an accurate image of your oral health will support your long-term goals.

Caring Dentistry

Additionally, here at Legacy Dental Care, we passionately believe that developing a relationship and rapport between you and your dentist will make you feel more comfortable discussing your goals for your smile.

First Dental Exam

Here is what you can expect at your first dental exam:

  • A consultation with your dentist
  • A thorough exam of each tooth
  • A gum evaluation
  • A set of x-rays for diagnosis
  • An evaluation of the jaw and bite
  • A cosmetic assessment
  • An explanation of your oral health
  • Recommendations for treatment
  • A treatment cost estimate

Dental Cleanings in South Calgary

By starting with a thorough oral exam, we will get the information necessary to arrange a customized dental cleaning. In some cases, a simple scale and polish will keep you healthy. If you have periodontal disease, however, we may need to book a series of deep dental cleanings to eliminate the infection.

We leave plenty of time at your first appointment for you to ask questions and share any changes with your oral health.

For most healthy patients, visiting your South Calgary dentist every six months for routine teeth cleanings and checkups is recommended.

If you are managing gum disease, you may need one or two cleanings each year in addition to your bi-annual cleanings to keep your condition under control.

Why Are Preventive Teeth Cleanings and Checkups Important?

Since gum disease is an active infection in your mouth, it’s important that you effectively manage this condition to guard not only your dental health but also your overall health.

Science has found clear links between the inflammation that causes gum disease, and the inflammation that causes other serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. It seems that having gum disease can contribute to these other health issues and vice versa.

Protecting your health with six-month cleanings and checkups will help you combat concerns like gum disease and tooth decay before they cause more significant problems.

We Invite You to Be a Part of Our Dental Family

If you’re looking for a family dentist in South Calgary, your team at Legacy Dental Care welcomes every member of the family from grandma to your toddler. We make it simple and convenient for families to have their dentistry in one location.

Regular dental cleanings help your teeth feel fantastically clean but that’s not all, they are also critical to your overall oral health.  Over time the soft, fuzzy-looking plaque that collects around our teeth gets hardened from minerals in our saliva.  This hardened plaque is called calculus or “tartar” and will attach itself to locations on your teeth above and below the gum line.  Despite doing a stellar job at brushing there is no way to remove these hardened deposits, only a trained dental professional with special instruments can do so.

These tartar deposits each containing millions of bacteria love to irritate our gum tissue. The inflammation that’s a result of this irritation is called gingivitis and left untreated can lead to irreversible destruction of the gums’ attachment to our teeth (periodontal disease).  Further destruction can even lead to bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

Regular Dental Exams in T2X 4K8

If that wasn’t motivation enough, one study found that patients with periodontal disease have a 2-3x higher chance of having a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular problems. Any type of inflammation anywhere in our body is not normal, so why should our gums be treated any differently?  We always recommend a regularly scheduled cleaning at specific intervals tailored to each individual for these reasons.  Call to book your appointment with one of our talented hygienists today in our south Calgary dental office and let us help you achieve the healthy smile we all want.

Root Canal Treatment

If you need root canal treatment in South Calgary, you might be concerned about the scary stories you’ve heard from other people. Dr. Wiedemann wants to put your mind at ease and let you know that modern dentistry has made root canal treatment a comfortable procedure. Not only that, it’s a treatment that will help you maintain a natural tooth that might otherwise be facing an extraction.

Root Canal Therapy in South Calgary

When you need a root canal, it’s most likely because your tooth is infected. It is this infection that causes your pain. Root canal therapy actually relieves your discomfort and removes the diseased tissue inside your tooth that is causing your toothache.

Dental Crown

Once your tooth heals and is infection-free, Dr. Wiedemann will strengthen it with a dental crown or permanent filling to ensure that you can eat and chew just as you did before.

Sedation Dentistry to Help With Anxiety

If you’re feeling extra anxious about your root canal procedure, talk with our dental team about using nitrous oxide to help you feel more relaxed. Nitrous is a gas that you breathe in during your procedure, which leaves your system right away when we complete your treatment. It doesn’t leave lingering side effects so you can get on with the process of healing from your infection.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Tooth coloured restorations are restorative options that enhance your smile’s appearance but may also treat an oral health condition.

A tooth-coloured filling in Calgary, AB, for example, treats a dental cavity but does not rely on silver amalgam. Instead, your dentist uses composite resin, which is coloured to blend with your tooth.

Another example of a tooth-coloured restoration is a dental crown. Dental crowns are used widely across dentistry. Your dentist may use one to finish your root canal treatment, cap a dental implant, or anchor a dental bridge. A dental crown can also conceal tooth flaws like chips, discoloration, and shape abnormalities.

A dental crown is a hollow cap that fits over a prepared tooth. It is coloured and shaped to fall in line with your teeth—no one will notice that it is a crown.

Think of tooth-coloured, then, restorations as a way to restore a tooth cosmetically.

Caring for a tooth-coloured filling or crown is simple because you treat them like part of your teeth—brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist on schedule.
