Tooth crowns and dental fillings are excellent solutions for restoring broken or decayed teeth, but what is the difference between them?

When Do I Need a Dental Filling?

A filling is ideal for restoring small areas of decay within a tooth that have left a hole or cavity. Tooth-coloured fillings are made of composite resin, which is durable and blends seamlessly with your tooth since it’s bonded directly to it. With excellent home care and regular dental checkups, your tooth-coloured fillings can last for many years.

When Do I Need a Dental Crown?

A dental crown in South Calgary restores your entire tooth. It fits over your remaining tooth, and it’s created to resemble your tooth’s shape and shade closely. A crown preserves your tooth function while also protecting the integrity of your root.

Your dentist may recommend a crown in these situations:

  • To restore a tooth that’s decayed more than a filling can repair
  • For a broken or chipped tooth
  • To strengthen a tooth that has had root canal therapy
  • As a single tooth restoration for a dental implant
  • To cover cosmetic flaws like chipping or discolouration

What Is the Process for Completing a Crown?

The process for getting a tooth crown is fairly straightforward and can typically be completed in a few weeks after two visits to your Legacy, AB dentist. During the first visit, your dentist prepares your tooth for its new restoration and creates a temporary crown for you to wear during the interim. It may take the dental laboratory anywhere from one to three weeks to handcraft your final crown.

Once it’s ready, you’ll return to our dental office to have it permanently placed and adjusted to your bite. Now you’re ready to enjoy your new tooth.

We welcome your call to our dental office if you have further questions about tooth crowns.
