Legacy Dental Care

At Legacy Dental Care, our goal is to help you maintain a beautiful and healthy smile containing your natural teeth for as long as possible. However, there may be some circumstances or certain procedures that you need where a tooth extraction becomes necessary.

If that time comes for you, we want you to rest assured that we have your best interests at heart and your comfort in mind. Our dentists in South Calgary don’t recommend tooth extractions unless it is essential or needed for certain procedures like full dentures or orthodontic treatment.

When Are Tooth Extractions Recommended?

If you live with a tooth or teeth that are compromised, infected, or decayed beyond what root canal treatment or a crown can repair, it may be the best option to have a tooth extraction to protect your dental health and keep your neighbouring teeth from becoming compromised.

Patients living with teeth that overlap or are crowded may need to have some teeth removed to complete orthodontic treatment. In some cases, tooth extraction could accelerate the treatment process so you can enjoy your straighter, more beautiful smile sooner.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars that arrive at the very back of your mouth behind your second molars. This typically happens around the ages of 18 to 25 for most people.

Your South Calgary dentist may recommend that you have your wisdom teeth removed for several reasons, including:

  • Crowding – Many people don’t have space in their mouths for wisdom teeth, and they could begin to crowd your healthy teeth, changing the appearance of your smile.
  • Cleanliness – Wisdom teeth are so far back in your mouth that they are often difficult to clean when brushing and flossing. If this is the case, you may encounter an increased risk of problems like tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.
  • Impaction – Wisdom teeth sometimes come in at weird angles that bother other teeth, or sometimes they remain impacted or stuck under the gumline. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, it increases your risk of developing an infection, and you should likely remove them.
