3 Reasons Why You Might Need Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted

Your dentist told you that it’s time to remove your wisdom teeth. However, you wonder if a tooth extraction is really necessary. After all, these are just extra molars— right?

While it’s true that your wisdom teeth are the last set of your molars to arrive, it’s also likely that you don’t need them. Your wisdom teeth could also be causing problems for other aspects of your smile. Here are three reasons your dentist may recommend wisdom teeth extraction in South Calgary.

#1: You Can’t Reach Them to Brush Properly

When your wisdom teeth arrive, they’re located at the very back of your mouth behind your second molars. It can be challenging to reach back there with your toothbrush and dental floss and keep your wisdom teeth clean. Plaque and bacteria buildup on your teeth can result in problems like tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.

#2: They’re Crowding Your Other Teeth

Our mouths have evolved over the years and become smaller than those of our hunter and gatherer ancestors. Because our diet no longer consists of roots, raw vegetables, and grains that were tough to chew, the third set of molars is no longer essential.

If you don’t have enough space for your wisdom teeth to come in, they may begin to push and crowd your other teeth. This could move your teeth out of the careful alignment that orthodontic treatment provided.

#3: They Could Be Impacted

Wisdom teeth sometimes don’t come in at all. When they remain stuck below the gum line (impacted), it can result in an infection. Your dentist in South Calgary will recommend that impacted wisdom teeth be removed to protect your dental health.
